DOGLIANI, A NAME THAT MAKES WINE COME TO MIND

Red wine is so much rooted in the productive tradition of Dogliani that the wine produced from the vines grown on these hills, Dolcetto wine, has adopted the name of the town itself.

When we are sitting in front of a good glass of that ruby-red wine, whose name is rather tricky (someone says that the name “dolcetto” (‘dolce’ means sweet) refers to the intense sweetness of the ripe grapes, others, instead, say that it is due to its taste, which is softer compared to other Piedmontese wines), what we do not see is the cyclical history of the hills of Dogliani, Clavesana, Carrù, Piozzo, Farigliano, Bastia and Cigliè,, where, every autumn, the ritual par excellence of the grape harvest recurs. The Langhe identify with wine and vice versa. And it is renowned not only for Dolcetto wine, but also for Arneis, Chardonnay, Nebbiolo…

This area of the Langhe has a lot to offer to the wine tourist looking for the most authentic flavors of the territory. A tour of wineries is a unique experience and the best way to taste this excellent product and appreciate all its features; a product which is finding the right recognition not only in Italy, but also around the world. In the center of Dogliani the wine culture has found its seat in the impressive basement of the ancient town hall dating back to the 16^th century, when it was a Carmelite Convent. LUIGI EINAUDI DIDN’T RENOUNCE THE RITUAL OF THE GRAPE HARVEST

Luigi Einaudi, the first elected president of the Italian Republic, was a producer of Dolcetto wine and it is said that, even in the most important and intense moments of his institutional life, he never failed to be in Dogliani during the harvest season. His connection with his hometown never faded: Luigi Einaudi was born in Carrù, but he spent his youth in Dogliani where, nowadays, his heirs still live. The traces of his presence, weather visible or not, are scattered everywhere in the town center: the library named after him, his vineyards on the hills and his grave in the monumental town cemetery.
